What Size Flat Iron Do I Need?

0
size flat irons

If you are looking for luscious flat iron curls, or crisp beach waves, or even pin point straight hair, then we are going to help you figure out which one of these size flat irons is the best for you. (Side note: keep in mind that the temperature on the flat iron is very important depending on if you have thick or thin hair, more important than size.)

Well hopefully you already know what flat iron brand you want to buy from, but now you are wondering what size flat iron do I need? Or, “there are different size flat irons?”

First things first, you need to know what size flat irons are out there.

Let’s start with the basics, like the standard size.

Standard Size Flat Iron

size flat ironsFlat irons usually come in 1 inch thick plate sizes. That means the plate is going to be an inch across, and then probably a couple inches long. This kind of flat iron can be used on every hair type, on any length of hair although it is not necessarily ideal for some hair types. (Like super short hair.) But they are the most basic all purpose hair straightener out there. I personally own a Chi Flat Iron which can be found at Ulta Beauty. If you follow the link, it will lead you to finding your perfect flat iron by putting in what you are searching for.

Smaller For A Reason

Small flat irons are always less than an inch. An inch being the standard size of a flat iron. This means that they usually range around ½ an inch. Smaller than that is basically for babies. Which I do not recommend using a hair straightener on your baby’s hair. I repeat, don’t do that.

Small flat irons are perfect for when you have short hair, and even better for fine hair, as it won’t burn through your hair as quickly if you have it on a higher setting. These flat irons will be able to get close to your scalp without you burning it. If you have short thick hair, not to worry, these small flat irons can get up to very high heats and are able to straighten and curl your hair just like any other flat iron.

This means you will be able to get tiny flat iron curls. How gorgeous is that?

Professionals recommend small flat irons if you are trying to have your hair very precise.

Bigger Does Not Mean Better

The bigger your flat iron the harder it is to carry around with you. Not to mention, this flat iron will be a lot heavier, a lot thicker, and will occupy a lot more space. But it is a necessity for anyone with very thick stubborn hair that just won’t settle down and do what you want it to. If your hair is also very long, then this may be the route to go if you don’t have a lot of time to style your hair. It will be able to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

On the other hand, when you go to style your hair with beautiful curls, this flat iron isn’t going to be able to provide you with nice bouncy curls. They will be very loose and very big. A large flat iron ranges anywhere from slightly bigger than the standard model to 2.5 maybe even 3 inches wide.

Think About The Weight

A lot of people don’t think about this when buying their flat iron, but you need to think about the weight of your flat iron.

If you don’t think about the weight of your flat iron, you may be left with one serious arm workout which will then turn you away from ever using your flat iron again. You don’t want that. So when considering buying a larger flat iron, take into account that the bigger the plate on it, the heavier it is going to be. But! The smaller flat irons are going to be easier to break when you drop them, and that isn’t good either. Be sure to get an iron that has some sort of grip on it, and that is going to feel comfortable in your hands.

What Are You Looking to Achieve In The End?

Are you looking for stylish hair, or are you looking to simply straighten your hair so it isn’t a total poof ball for the rest of the day? Whatever the case may be, make sure you have your goals in mind. Knowing what your goals are for your hair is very important to picking what size flat iron you need.

Now that we have that out of the way, you should really know the answer to these questions:

  • How long is your hair?
  • What is your hair type? (If you don’t know, check out our article on different hair types).
  • How much time do you want to spend on your hair?
  • Do you need your flat iron to do everything? (Curl and straighten?)

Once you know the answer to those questions, you will better be able to understand what flat iron size is for you. Hair can be so complicated sometimes. So back to what we were talking about before.

Small Size Flat Irons:

size flat ironsThese are perfect for if you have short hair, and thin hair. That being said, they are also amazing for styling purposes.

Curls:

You will be able to achieve tight bouncy curls with a small flat iron. A small flat iron is perfect for pencil curls.

Men:

More men are styling their hair, and caring about their appearance and it is so attractive. That being said, since men have short hair and are into styling it: this is the perfect flat iron for you.

Traveling:

Perfect for traveling with, even though airlines have become more strict with what you can carry.

Time:

Small flat irons will take up a bit more of your time if you have longer hair, but is time efficient is you have short hair. Because this is a detail oriented flat iron, you are going to want to make sure you have time set aside to work with it.

Standard Size Flat Irons:

Your most basic flat iron. Perfect for all hair types and lengths.

Curls:

Perfect for up-dos, half up half down hairstyles, or just regular ol’ beach waves.

Men:

If you are looking for a flat iron for styling purposes, than this isn’t really going to be the one for you. But if you have longer hair than most men, then by all means get this flat iron.

Traveling:

If you have longer hair and travel a lot, this is going to be your best option.

Time:

The standard flat iron will be able to get the job done faster than the small iron, but not as quick as the large flat iron. This iron will still be able to work in tight places and make your hair look as perfect as you would like it to.

Large Size Flat Irons:

size flat ironsThis thick flat iron is for your longer tougher hair types out there.

Curls:

Perfect for big barrel curls, although they may not hold all too well.

Men:

If you are a man and you have long thick gorgeous hair, then by all means, this is also the straightener for you.

Traveling:

Seriously, this is the worst iron to travel with. You’re better off with a standard flat iron if you are going to be traveling a lot.

Time:

This is the most time efficient flat iron you could have for longer and thicker hair than the usual hair types. The larger plate means it will cover more area of hair in a shorter amount of time.

Whatever flat iron you end up picking, I know it will be the best one for you and your hair. Good luck with finding your perfect flat iron and enjoy your styling adventures!

Different Hair Types Means Different Needs

0
hair types

There are so many different kinds of hair out there. Whether you have tight curls, an afro, or just plain straight hair. Each hair type has its very own needs. Needs that need to be met at some time or another in life, otherwise you may go bald. It could be just as simple as finding the right shampoo and conditioner, or the best way to sleep with your hair. Or it could be as complicated as what products you should be using after you get out of the shower, before you go to bed, or first thing in the morning. Who knows?! Well we know how to solve your problems, you just need to know your hair type.

As you continue reading, you will be able to get a better idea of your hair type and what your hair type needs.

Different hair types, means different needs.

There are four separate sections we will be talking about related to hair and there are plenty of subsections. Plus, all the details about taking care of each type of hair.

different hair typesStraight

Fine/Thin

You know you have this hair if your hair can not even sort of hold a curl. It’s like your hair isn’t even trying to do what you want it to. Your hair is very soft, shiny, and probably oily but, don’t worry because your hair is very hard to damage no matter what you do to it. Which is what some of the other hair types would kill for.

Medium

You are the one of the lucky ones that has very straight hair and is what you would call thick in comparison to your fellow fine haired friends. Your hair has an easier job of holding curls but it is still always straight when you wake up in the morning. Thank God it can keep its volume though and not lay completely flat.

Coarse

This kind of hair is found mostly in women that has Asian heritage. Your hair is thick, shiny, and pin point straight. Again, your hair lacks the ability to hold curls though which can be frustrating when you are looking to style it up for prom night, or even just to have some beautiful beach waves just for once. But seriously, don’t fret too much because your hair is absolutely fantastic and there are plenty of people that will never be able to have the thick hair you have been blessed with.

different hair typesWavy

Fine/Thin

You have the beach wave barbie hair that everyone wants when they head off to the beach, which is great like all the time. Your hair holds this natural S wave to it, making your hair always look bouncy and full. That being said, your hair can be a bit of a pain to work with after you get out of the shower. To achieve these beautiful beach waves, that your hair type has been blessed with, you have to really work at it or not touch it all, which is so annoying. You hair holds curls well and will go straight as long as water doesn’t touch it after you have straightened.

Medium

This is the wavy hair type that most people think of when you hear wavy hair. Medium type hair is a bit difficult to work with, probably annoying to brush out, but you can still work through it. And this hair will definitely frizz up if there is any humidity outside. The hours you spent working on your hair to straighten it all out have just gone out the window thanks to the chance of rain.

Coarse

Coarse hair types have horse mane like hair, thick gorgeous hair that is usually always frizzy and the only way it can be tamed is by throwing it up in a messy bun and hoping it learns to calm down. You know if you have this hair by the non stop frizziness you had to put up with as a child until you learned about the hair products that will bring it down.

different hair typesCurly

Loose

Loose curls is basically fine/thin wavy hair but if it has evolved to its next form. This hair will have beautiful “S” curls that are defined, thick, and have a lot of body to them. They are usually paired with a bit of frizz, because no one can be too perfect.

Tight

People probably have come up asking to touch your hair, or maybe pull on a curl or two, just to watch it spring back. You’re not quite at coily hair where it is very small tight curls, you still have big curls that stay very close together and like to bounce as you walk around. Which means people really like to invade the personal space of this hair type.

different hair typesCoily/Kinky

Soft

Your hair, is very fragile, yet really tight to your head. There are a whole number of products that you have to use to keep your hair from having problems and breaking off too early. Growing out your hair is probably a huge struggle as well. People usually tend to stare at your hair, wanting to ask to touch it but wait to become friends with you until they ask to touch your type of hair.

Wiry (with curl pattern)

Wiry hair is basically an afro, but there is still some curl definition in there. You can still see the cute little spirals and people definitely want to touch your hair. You already know all the struggles that there are with keeping your hair perfect and beautiful. And that if you want to do your hair a certain day, you have to set aside a whole day to do it.

Wiry (with no pattern)

You, my friend, have a full blown beautiful natural afro that has no real curl pattern to it at all. Be proud of your hair because having hair this wonderful is a blessing. If you ever decide to change your hair though, just like wiry with a curl pattern, you definitely have to set aside a whole day to have your hair braided, straightened, dyed, cut, whatever it may be, it is always a process.

Hair Products Are a Necessity

different hair types different needsOils

For: Wavy, Curly, Coily/Kinky

I have Fine/Thin wavy hair, but I also love to dye my hair. And because of this, I have fried my hair a few times so I personally use Moroccan oil, which can be bought at Ulta Beauty or your local CVS/Walgreens actually. But I know lots of my friends like using macadamia oil, coconut oil… Some of my friends actually just use olive oil and it works like a charm. Oils are used specifically for repairing your hair and restoring it to its old self. Your scalp and hair have natural oils that keep your hair silky smooth and sometimes your hair type just needs an extra boost. I do not recommend straight hair using oil, as your hair naturally produces more oils than most.

different hair types different needsMousses

For: All different hair types. Recommended mostly for curly and coily/kinky hair.

This is for styling your hair right after you get out of the shower, while your hair is still damp. Depending on your hair type you may need a lot, or you might just need a little. All hair types are different. This is perfect for keeping your curls and waves in place, as well as maintaining the frizz.

different hair types different needsGels

For: All different hair types. Recommended mostly for curly and coily/kinky hair.

If you have some serious fly aways, or your edges just won’t lay down the way you want them to, then gel is perfect for that. Gel hardens and keeps everything perfectly in place making your hair stay rock solid under any kind of condition. If you want the same effect but for everything to stay a bit more natural looking than I recommend hairspray.

different hair types different needsHairsprays

For: All different hair types. Recommended mostly for all straight hair.

This will hold any curl, wave, braid, fly away, you name it, in place. Any hair type that is trying to style their hair can use hairspray to get everything to just stay in place. Once upon a time, people would go through a bottle of hairspray a week but now a days I do not recommend that. It is bad for your brain, and for your lungs if you have that much hairspray floating around your head.

different hair types different needsMasks

For: All different hair types.

There are so many hair masks out there. Be sure to try a few out. My personal favorite is a coconut oil mask, where you just soak your hair in coconut oil, wrap it up, and sleep with it. When you wake up, wash all the oil out of your hair and be amazed at how silky smooth and shiny your hair will look.

What is a flat iron:

Be aware that there are several different styles of flat irons. But, the basics are – that flat irons use heat to lengthen and straighten curly, wavy and sometimes frizzy locks. Hair is placed into the barrel of a flat ceramic, titanium or tourmaline plate piece and then lightly pressed together to allow hair to slide gently through the plate to straighten the hair. Flat irons help avoid the damage that can be caused by chemical straighteners and are a great value depending on the type plate and brand you buy.

What types of hair can a flat iron straighten?:

Flat irons were created to be versatile enough to manage the needs of several different hair types:

Fine – Limp, thin hair

Damaged – color treated, chemically straightened hair

Healthy – Hair that is strong and hasn’t been chemically treated or in other ways damaged from combing and other processes

Irons come different settings depending on hair type and range from 80 degrees f to 450 degrees f. Once the hair has been prepared for heat styling using either styling cream or straightening balm, the plate inside the iron is heated up to the correct temperature allowing hair to be placed onto the iron for temporary straightening. Once hair is washed, it will need a flat iron process again to recreate a smooth straight look.

Do’s and don’ts of using a flat iron to straighten your hair:

Woman having a bad hair day

Flat irons can be an integral part of the process to getting just the right straight hair look for you. They can make your hair look and feel great. However, irons can cause damage if they aren’t used properly. To head off problems from flat ironing hair, read on to discover the dos and don’ts you’ll need to remember when you use your new flat iron device.

Do – Remember to use heat protectant because using a flat iron removes natural moisture from the hair causing the hair to begin to fizz not straighten. Heat protectants come in sprays, creams, and serums and must always be used before using applying a hot flat iron onto hair.

Do – Run hair though the flat iron only once. Why do only once? Because running hair multiple times through a flat iron can cause drying and frizziness at the ends of the hair while leaving the inner parts smooth making hair look unbalanced.

Do – When using your flat iron, remember to section the hair working from the back towards the front. Section the hair into in 1/2-inch parts while using the iron to allow heat to circulate through the hair and begin at the root to avoid heat damage to the hair strand.

Don’t – It is important to understand, not to overheat hair stands. So, be sure to avoid extreme temperatures while you’re flat ironing your hair. One great rule to follow is this – Coarse hair means higher temperature there, fine, limp locks avoid hot temperature shocks.

Don’t – Avoid the sizzling sound. If you hear a sizzling sound while flat ironing your hair, then you could be burning it which will cause breakage and damage to the hair strand. If you hear a sizzling sound while using your iron and you are sure your hair is completely dry, it could be caused by product build-up on the iron or your hair.

Don’t – Never use flat irons on wet or damp hair because it will cause damage to hair. Be sure to completely dry hair before using a flat iron.

Which flat iron is right for you?

There are several different styles of flat irons on the market today which operate in a variety of ways. The main three flat iron styles we will cover in the Flat Iron Buying Guide are Ceramic, Titanium, and Tourmaline. Each of these current models works with different heat power which means it becomes more important to understand these differences before you choose your flat iron model. All of these models offer salon quality and at-home use units.

cheap vs expensive hair straighteners

Tourmaline irons are newer model irons that offer smooth wavy locks which allow hair to remain fizz and more damage free than simply positively charged hair by combining negatively plus positively charged ions to gain a more balanced lock. Tourmaline irons are well suited for running hair through the iron once. Tourmaline irons work well with fine and tightly coiled hair.

Pros:
Consistent heat distribution
Holds moisture into the hair strand
Stays effective at lower heat settings
Works well for fine or damaged hair

Cons:
Doesn’t work well on super curly thick hair

Ceramic Irons have remained popular with solid salon quality operation due to its quick heat up and solid heat distribution. Ceramic irons are best suited towards those with fine, straight to wavy hair.

Pros:
Strong reputation with great market record for quality
Secure, steady even heat distribution
Economically priced

Cons:
Can come in ceramic or ceramic coating which easily chips

Titanium irons are the most current flat iron on the market today, and they offer great styling options for several different hair types. Because of several different heat settings, titanium irons can easily lessen heat damage while providing exceptional flatness and shine for curly, thick, and wavy hair. However be aware that those with delicate, damaged or fine hair should choose either a tourmaline or ceramic due to the fast heat up of the model. Titanium irons are heavy duty irons that work best for anyone with thick, curly hair.

Pros:
Safest metal plates on the market
Even heat distribution
Newest flat iron type
Neutralizes static electricity

Cons:
Because of quick heat up, can damage hair

Flatiron models come in a variety of sizes ranging from one inch to upward to 2.5 inches. Picking the perfect flat iron for you comes down to choice, preference and what type of hair length plus thickness you have. One size does not fit all when it comes to flat irons.

Here are a few things to consider when shopping for the perfect flat iron:

The length of your hair – Shorter hair can easily accommodate a one-inch iron, where someone with long thick hair would struggle.

The texture of your hair – Damaged hair should never be ironed with a Titanium model due to the chance for greater harm. Check over your hair from root to end to check for strength, thickness, and texture and ask yourself:

  • Does my hair break easily? Then a ceramic or tourmaline flat iron is best for you.
  • Do I have very thick strong hair? Gals with thick, strong hair will find that a Titanium model will work best.
  • Is my hair short or long? A plate width length of 1 inch works for shorter hair while a greater plate width will suit longer hair
