There are so many different kinds of hair out there. Whether you have tight curls, an afro, or just plain straight hair. Each hair type has its very own needs. Needs that need to be met at some time or another in life, otherwise you may go bald. It could be just as simple as finding the right shampoo and conditioner, or the best way to sleep with your hair. Or it could be as complicated as what products you should be using after you get out of the shower, before you go to bed, or first thing in the morning. Who knows?! Well we know how to solve your problems, you just need to know your hair type.
As you continue reading, you will be able to get a better idea of your hair type and what your hair type needs.
Different hair types, means different needs.
There are four separate sections we will be talking about related to hair and there are plenty of subsections. Plus, all the details about taking care of each type of hair.
Straight
Fine/Thin
You know you have this hair if your hair can not even sort of hold a curl. It’s like your hair isn’t even trying to do what you want it to. Your hair is very soft, shiny, and probably oily but, don’t worry because your hair is very hard to damage no matter what you do to it. Which is what some of the other hair types would kill for.
Medium
You are the one of the lucky ones that has very straight hair and is what you would call thick in comparison to your fellow fine haired friends. Your hair has an easier job of holding curls but it is still always straight when you wake up in the morning. Thank God it can keep its volume though and not lay completely flat.
Coarse
This kind of hair is found mostly in women that has Asian heritage. Your hair is thick, shiny, and pin point straight. Again, your hair lacks the ability to hold curls though which can be frustrating when you are looking to style it up for prom night, or even just to have some beautiful beach waves just for once. But seriously, don’t fret too much because your hair is absolutely fantastic and there are plenty of people that will never be able to have the thick hair you have been blessed with.
Wavy
Fine/Thin
You have the beach wave barbie hair that everyone wants when they head off to the beach, which is great like all the time. Your hair holds this natural S wave to it, making your hair always look bouncy and full. That being said, your hair can be a bit of a pain to work with after you get out of the shower. To achieve these beautiful beach waves, that your hair type has been blessed with, you have to really work at it or not touch it all, which is so annoying. You hair holds curls well and will go straight as long as water doesn’t touch it after you have straightened.
Medium
This is the wavy hair type that most people think of when you hear wavy hair. Medium type hair is a bit difficult to work with, probably annoying to brush out, but you can still work through it. And this hair will definitely frizz up if there is any humidity outside. The hours you spent working on your hair to straighten it all out have just gone out the window thanks to the chance of rain.
Coarse
Coarse hair types have horse mane like hair, thick gorgeous hair that is usually always frizzy and the only way it can be tamed is by throwing it up in a messy bun and hoping it learns to calm down. You know if you have this hair by the non stop frizziness you had to put up with as a child until you learned about the hair products that will bring it down.
Curly
Loose
Loose curls is basically fine/thin wavy hair but if it has evolved to its next form. This hair will have beautiful “S” curls that are defined, thick, and have a lot of body to them. They are usually paired with a bit of frizz, because no one can be too perfect.
Tight
People probably have come up asking to touch your hair, or maybe pull on a curl or two, just to watch it spring back. You’re not quite at coily hair where it is very small tight curls, you still have big curls that stay very close together and like to bounce as you walk around. Which means people really like to invade the personal space of this hair type.
Coily/Kinky
Soft
Your hair, is very fragile, yet really tight to your head. There are a whole number of products that you have to use to keep your hair from having problems and breaking off too early. Growing out your hair is probably a huge struggle as well. People usually tend to stare at your hair, wanting to ask to touch it but wait to become friends with you until they ask to touch your type of hair.
Wiry (with curl pattern)
Wiry hair is basically an afro, but there is still some curl definition in there. You can still see the cute little spirals and people definitely want to touch your hair. You already know all the struggles that there are with keeping your hair perfect and beautiful. And that if you want to do your hair a certain day, you have to set aside a whole day to do it.
Wiry (with no pattern)
You, my friend, have a full blown beautiful natural afro that has no real curl pattern to it at all. Be proud of your hair because having hair this wonderful is a blessing. If you ever decide to change your hair though, just like wiry with a curl pattern, you definitely have to set aside a whole day to have your hair braided, straightened, dyed, cut, whatever it may be, it is always a process.
Hair Products Are a Necessity
Oils
For: Wavy, Curly, Coily/Kinky
I have Fine/Thin wavy hair, but I also love to dye my hair. And because of this, I have fried my hair a few times so I personally use Moroccan oil, which can be bought at Ulta Beauty or your local CVS/Walgreens actually. But I know lots of my friends like using macadamia oil, coconut oil… Some of my friends actually just use olive oil and it works like a charm. Oils are used specifically for repairing your hair and restoring it to its old self. Your scalp and hair have natural oils that keep your hair silky smooth and sometimes your hair type just needs an extra boost. I do not recommend straight hair using oil, as your hair naturally produces more oils than most.
Mousses
For: All different hair types. Recommended mostly for curly and coily/kinky hair.
This is for styling your hair right after you get out of the shower, while your hair is still damp. Depending on your hair type you may need a lot, or you might just need a little. All hair types are different. This is perfect for keeping your curls and waves in place, as well as maintaining the frizz.
Gels
For: All different hair types. Recommended mostly for curly and coily/kinky hair.
If you have some serious fly aways, or your edges just won’t lay down the way you want them to, then gel is perfect for that. Gel hardens and keeps everything perfectly in place making your hair stay rock solid under any kind of condition. If you want the same effect but for everything to stay a bit more natural looking than I recommend hairspray.
Hairsprays
For: All different hair types. Recommended mostly for all straight hair.
This will hold any curl, wave, braid, fly away, you name it, in place. Any hair type that is trying to style their hair can use hairspray to get everything to just stay in place. Once upon a time, people would go through a bottle of hairspray a week but now a days I do not recommend that. It is bad for your brain, and for your lungs if you have that much hairspray floating around your head.
Masks
For: All different hair types.
There are so many hair masks out there. Be sure to try a few out. My personal favorite is a coconut oil mask, where you just soak your hair in coconut oil, wrap it up, and sleep with it. When you wake up, wash all the oil out of your hair and be amazed at how silky smooth and shiny your hair will look.
